Empowering Independence & Wellbeing for All, One Act of Care at a Time

Purpose

The provision of care to elderly parents, ailing partners, or children with special needs is a responsibility shouldered by adult caregivers. The caregiver population in the United States amounts to 48 million, with 11 million specifically catering to the elderly. These caregivers incur an average annual out of pocket expense of around $7200. The proposed Caregivers Credit Act, if enacted is anticipated to provide relief by reimbursing caregivers up to $5000 per year.

A noteworthy statistic reveals that one in every 4 baby boomers assumes the role of a caregiver. Baby boomers, constituting individuals born between 1946 and 1964, represent 38% of all caregivers in the country, despite comprising only 23% of the total population (74 million (CDC, 2018). The CDC’s 2018 report indicates that baby boomer caregivers exhibit a higher prevalence of chronic conditions, disabilities, and lower self-rated health in comparison to non-caregiving baby boomers.

The CDC’s findings further illustrate that baby boomer caregivers are more susceptible to conditions such as arthritis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and multiple chronic health issues, in contrast to their non-caregiving counterparts. Additionally, 15% of baby boomer caregivers reported experiencing frequent mental distress, characterized by 14 or more days of poor mental health within a month.

The responsibilities of caregiving can significantly impact the personal and professional lives of caregivers. Juggling competing priorities can take a toll on their physical and emotional well-being, despite the inherent sense of fulfillment derived from their role.

As the founder of Charlie’s Angel’s LLC., my primary objective is to provide resources that offer assistance and bolster support for caregivers. These caregivers, predominantly adults, devote their time and energy to caring for aging parents, ill partners or spouses, and children with special needs. Being a baby boomer, it is paramount for me to equip caregivers and care recipients with the necessary support to sustain optimal health.

Moreover, addressing homelessness holds significant importance in my heart. My younger sibling, a Navy veteran, found himself homeless post his military service. Upon discovering him, he was residing in an abandoned van with several others, striving to keep warm by a makeshift bonfire. I brought him into my home, where he resided with my family for several years until he regained stability. Eventually, he relocated to Maryland, lived in a communal setting, and pursued a career as a welder, a position facilitated by the Veterans Administration. On November 9, 2012, my brother peacefully passed away in his sleep. Despite his demise, he took immense pride in his accomplishments and his resilience in overcoming adversity.

Our focus

Women Veterans

Enhancing the quality of life, fostering peace, and promoting the well-being of unsheltered women Veterans form a crucial component of caregiver support. A study conducted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in January 2023 revealed that approximately 22 out of every 10,000 veterans were grappling with homelessness. Alarmingly, female veterans are twice as likely as their non-veteran counterparts to face homelessness. Women who have served in the armed forces may encounter a myriad of challenges during their transition to civilian life, including navigating single parenthood, reintegrating into familial or marital settings, coping with the psychological aftermath of military service, instances of sexual trauma, as well as encountering barriers in securing employment and stable housing. Without proactive interventions, these challenges, among others, could heighten the susceptibility of women veterans to homelessness and human trafficking risk.

As per the data from the U. S. Department of Veteran Affairs (2020), the population of female Veterans stood at approximately 42,122. Women Veterans exhibit distinct requirements and face a twofold likelihood of homelessness compared to their non-Veteran counterparts, changing the trajectory of caregiving. Women who have served in the military may confront challenges when transitioning to civilian life, such as sole child-rearing, reintegration into marital or familial ties, coping with the psychological repercussions of military encounters, sexual trauma, employment hurdles, and housing obstacles. In the absence of proactive measures, these and various other issues could heighten the susceptibility of women Veterans to homelessness.
